Qun Wang is visiting Barcelona, and will do a talk about the N-Vortex problem.

Title: Periodic Solutions of the N-Vortex Problem

Abstract: Originally emerged from the Euler equation, the N-vortex system goes back to Helmholtz, Lord Kelvin, Kirchhoff and has up to now 160 years of history with applications in many scientific domains: from hydrodynamics to quantum mechanics, from the membrane shape control to the evolution of stellar systems. The point vortex models provide not only a simplified tool to understand physical systems, but also a classical playground for different branches of mathematics. As the number of vortices increases, integrability will in general break, and the search of periodic solutions of such system for arbitrary number of vortices are difficult. In this talk, we will focus on the study of periodic solutions for the N-vortex problem from various aspects, including the existence and the symmetry, on both the plane and the closed Riemannian surfaces, thus give more evidence on the rich link between vortex dynamics and its underlying geometry.
